Ebay takes a cut from the seller, hence why they still had this archaic system. It doesn't benefit the buyers at all, despite Ebay pretend "buyers first" policy. A person who doesn't snipe or use snipe-bot are literally, literally and not figuratively an ignoramus and a public menace to other buyers.
Also sniping protects you from getting shilled tactic, "shill" in the textbook dictionary way, e.g. the ebay seller having a friend who artificially increases the price so you pay more.
