Fuck super articulated toys that could pull off many poses, because presculpted mcstatue are king (in the 90s).
Playmates likely did it first with TMNT and then McFarlane popularized it.
And it's not really a missing link, as that sort of engineering had been around since maybe the 70s. MEGO figures were 8" and had the same engineering as gi joes. There are cowboy lines that were basically GI Joes too. There's also a Japanese toy or two that were basically upscaled GI Joes.
Have another 80s line that was basically an upscaled GI Joe.
