Funny, too- after BM flopped and nearly killed all the good will BW generated, RID was hastily imported from Japan, and was moderately successful at making people happy. So when they made the next series from scratch, they looked at how RID had succeeded where BM had failed, and Micron Densetsu/Armada was what they created. And it worked! Kids loved it both in the West and Japan, and the toys sold like hotcakes. Heck, if it hadn't been successful they wouldn't have made two sequel series. Only people that hated it at the time were crusty boomers mad it wasn't geewun. As for the show I've been watching the Japanese version and at absolute worst it's a fairly average for the time kids' anime. I'd argue it's aged better than G1, and I LIKE G1.
