I remember hearing a story from someone who was supposedly the daughter from one of the brand managers at Mattel who said Mattel did a buy-back of unsold stock from "normal" retail stores because it sold so poorly. Take that with a grain of salt, but either way they ended up making it to closeout stores one way or another.
