Like yes, Matoran were never meant to have the capacity to devolve into violence and warfare to the degree that they did, but freedom of thought and identity eventually spiralled out into the chaos that ensued. I like to headcanon this as Velika's motivation for his god complex, since he sees the wrongs behind ever allowing the MU to think for themselves and he desperately wants to put the genie back into the bottle by any means.
