>Writing is fun enough. It's clearly going for a lighter approach, at least initially, and I'm sure part of that is because of what CN wants out of their programming. It's cute but nothing great, it just does its job in advertising the series and being fun. Plot is nigh-nonexistent but that might change soon.>Characters are simple but likable, no one feels particularly grating or annoying, though the Masquerade replacement feels like a jobber right now. The villain group in particular is cool, unique designs and fun personalities.>Designs and art style are cute, clean, distinct and striking. They have this somewhat deformed, "shrimpy" look compared to the originals that I can't describe, but it's kind of appealing, visually. CGI is acceptable.>The battles use the simplified rules of nu-Bakugan with some exaggerated twists (like characters physically running around the field for Bakucores). I've never been a fan of when anime based on card games just don't use the proper rules, it feels more satisfying when I see an anime character make a play and go "I could do that!">Voice work ranges from solid to laughable. Wynton for example sounds pretty good on average (I hear he's got quite a bit of VA work under his belt before this, though), but Dan, despite having the lead role, has a weird voice and sounds very stilted and odd, like he's not human. It seems like he's caught in trying to match the mouth flaps, but in general the way he inflects is off. Now, the important shit:
There's hardly any waifus, bros. Between Runo, Julie, and Alice in the original series, you had the most solid of reasons to whip your solid snake out and get to jerkin' the gherkin. Here we have Lia, who's not even on the same level, and China Riot, who's actually pretty ace if you don't mind jail.
But all in all, it's just "ok". Could be way better, but could be much worse. I think it ultimately does the job a show needs to do - entertain the kiddies, sell some toys.
