The issue here is a poorly designed joint which suffers from excessive pressure, hence why shaving it off actually solves the issue entirely. If it was actual GPS then poor Rattrap would not have stress marks or clear cracks in certain spots, but rather, he would literally crumble to pieces with just the slightest pressure applied in any of the orange parts.
