Their patrol through the blackness of No Man's Land was interrupted by a tank breakdown and when they finally got underway again it was discovered the tank's exhaust mufflers had failed. Rather than send the noisy tank back to base on its own the patrol captain aborted the mission, with too much time lost by the breakdown as it was.
