I know it sounds corny, but he's considered somewhat of a "cultural ambassador" for Japan, which is why the 1998 movie was considered such an insult. Most Westerners are incapable of seeing Godzilla and the daikaiju subgenre beyond the surface level of "haha big dinosaur go stomp."
I initially hated the G2014 Fatzilla design, but I think the 2019 updates improve it. Those were probably some of the only objectively good design choices made by Dougherty. The only change I would make to Legendary Goji would be to make his head bigger.
