The overall view about Star Wars back then was that it was good, it just had some really cringey elements, if not things that only nerds got overly butthurt about (midichlrorians) which affected nothing because those same nerds continued gobbling everything Star Wars up
The prequels continued the proliferation of the Star Wars brand for another decade.
