Lego literally forced g2 to cross compete against starwars while films were dropping by producing both at the same time, and then selling them both on the same shelves. That'd be a hard sell for even established ips to handle, but then the heads at Lego got scared that 'nobody likes constraction anymore' after the sales weren't astronomical and pulled the rug before anyone even really got wind of bionicles' grand return since there were no ad campaigns for it.
