Back then it were your regular bishonen guys that, at least people from outside anime and co. circles, would mistake for girls. You know, your long haired slim androgyne guys from 90s/early 00s animes in somewhat questionable clothes.
Over time things just got more extreme.
While usually not traps, since their owners don't want people to think they are girls, they are pretty close look-wise. Traps are nowadays also very popular, just look at /cm/ and /y/.
It's definitely a very anime/yaoi inspired thing. Not to mention that a lot of feminine guys/girls who like to pretend to be feminine guys for internet points now have platforms they can share their stuff on and get popular for.
