Hasbro did a shit-ass job on those things. They had much fewer body parts (which equals less to swap between figures/build with), and their articulation was garbage (Xevoz had spectacular poseability). Hell, they even removed joints after the first wave or two, they used to have ankles. Xevoz was much more buildable, each figure usually came with sufficient parts to build two different configurations, and they had dedicated hardpoints as well to attach armor or weapons. By comparison, most Hero Mashers usually came with a single weapon (if even that).
The problem wasn't Hero Mashers themselves as a concept, it was Hasbro doing a lazy/cheap job on the line.
