The main reason why is due to Wal-Mart and Target selling their own 18 inch doll brands at their stores for a much, much lower cost. Why would a parent spend hundreds of dollars on an AG doll that is only available for mail order when you get a similar doll for $25 at the local big box store?
It also didn't help that the only retail store that did carry AG dolls was Toys R Us, which died ou here in the Us in 2018. And then there's the whole situation of kids preferring tablets & phones over toys, but that's an industry wide problem.
