The main protagonist can turn into a Kaiju and his name is, as the series implies, Kaiju no.8, but there's also Kaiju no.1, 2, 3, and so on.
This mushroom-headed freak is Kaiju no.9 and he's the main antagonist, constantly evolving and likened to a virus.
Picrel: his design changes a bit not that far into the series, though. I doubt we'll ever get that version.
