I didnt mind the big empty parts. It always helped to build big constructions. The stone pieces are perfect for big walls than single bricks. But i agree that you need a good balance of having smaller bricks than singular use big bricks.
The colors are fine, if you keep in mind that it is a dollhouse line.
Overall Belville reminds me of Fabuland. They used big brick too and big pieces like stairs.
