1) the skeksis route, the performer's head is sitting in a cowl of some kind in back. Not really valid here, but it could make for some decently forward-pointed heads
2) build up the shoulders, e.g. Goro. Unfortunately, unless you have another set of arms to put up there too (and even if you do, that ended up looking super awkward), you now have these super high shoulders that the performer's shoulders don't line up with. one single movement of the arm and the entire thing's a dead giveaway.
it's important to hide the performer and the limitations thereof. otherwise you end up with the Garthim from Dark Crystal, with clearly visible human legs.
pic attached is possible, but the result is now the arm can't move backward whatsoever (try it yourself) and can only move forward 90 degrees, plus now the elbow mech has to be way more complex.
