I also think it depends on how you handle the car; when I first got that Trueno, I carried it around in my jacket pocket to show off to my friends during lockdown DnD Saturday nights (They weren't really interested so only I got to make it do pretend drifts on my corner of the board while looking up how much scalpers were reselling them for until it was my turn to roll 1s and 2s). The fabric rubbing the wheels probably helped the chrome start flaking faster.
This Supra has been out of its box multiple times, but usually just sits around. The chrome is the exact color the Trueno had but its held on, despite the thinner rims.
I think if your cars spend most of their time just rolling around on the desk and avoid rubbing their wheels against stuff, the chrome should be fine.
And if not and you have to repaint them, a duller metallic gold will at least match the side decals of that Baja Bug, although those tiny spoke holes look tedious to pack. You might could spray over them and then fill in the holes with a black felt tip pen, if you have to do it.
