>>10397304Part type is the way to go. The only exception is storing brittle or special colors like brown, dark red, or classic gray separately. Depending on collection size you can save a lot of space by stacking plates together in a staggered fashion that is easy to pull apart. Cheap toy bins and harbor freight toolboxes are very cheap. The toolboxes are especially great because they have removable cubbies that make part-seeking very easy. Depending on your collection size and personal autism I also recommend inventorying everything on a site like Rebrickable so you can know every last piece in your collection without having to seek it out. It's really nice when you can quickly whip out your phone while building and know whether you have only one of that obscure piece in that obscure color, or two, before you even get up to look.
