I once heard that within the harem genre the ‘younger sister’ archetype started because writers were trying to justify why the ‘childhood friend’ character shouldn’t always win by default in the eyes of the audience, and figured making the prospective relationship genuinely taboo would complicate this sufficiently.
But that does really explain incest’s prevalence outside the harem genre.
