If you want to draft patterns for 3D plush you can ether flat pattern it, which takes a lot of drafts and reworks, or you can make a model of the shape you want to make out of clay or 3D print one, pull a duct-tape cast from the model, and use that to form patterns. Most of my personal patterns are flat-patterned but I use the ducttape method more at work where fitting plush to very specific, low-tolerance forms is more important.
