Consider the runaway success of Monster High, it was insanely popular and an absolute "counter" to princess and barbie lines. (It blows my mind that the main character of a fashion doll line had a massive, prominent facial scar and no one cared.) Predictably, the day Mattel tried to "soft reboot" it by making it girlier and pinker/softer (to imitate barbie and princesses) the franchise died.
