Based on the sets and presentation in the comics, toa, matoran, and turaga always felt like fully mechanical beings, while bohrok had their clearly-organic krana (and later the rakshi had the kraata). So I was always under the impression as a kid that only the bad guys had organic elements to them, and the organic material was always some corrupting force. It was actually really surprising to find out nearly 20 years later that it was actually canon for the toa, matoran, and turaga to be like 20% biological or something.
