Because in the first half of the movie, they were having Matau struggle to comes to terms with all the Hordika stuff, and in the prior movie, he sort of acted like being a Toa was all fun and games and like it was a joke. But then Lego probably intervened again and told them to make Vakama the one who turns bad, due to someone in Lego liking Matau the most out of the Toa Metru. Then Miramax looked at each other in a kind of “Did you hear what this guy just said to us? Lego’s pulling this stuff on us AGAIN...” And so Miramax has to make do.
Honestly, I think part of the reason Miramax didn’t adapt any of the other years into movies is because Lego kept on changing things last minute, and with Greg now fully at the helm of the writing department, and due to his tendency to never think ahead while writing stories, Miramax wants no part of that, since they’ve already had to rewrite parts of their other movies. Another reason is that Lego probably said that the lastxmibie didn’t sell too well, despite that being their own fault (similar to how they ended Bionicle G2, they ended it because they didn’t advertise it hardly, now give it much attention in other media).
