The design team during that period created all the sub-teams as ways to compete with new toys from competitors hitting the market, and it was making a dent in the competition. Ninja Force was created to take on TMNT, Mega Marines was to compete with Aliens vs Predator, Eco Warriors and DEF was for Captain Planet, and Star Brigade was created to fuck over Kenner's attempt at reviving Star Wars which never happened until Hasbro ended up buying them.
The behind the scenes videos of those commercials actually made me interested in picking up more 90's vehicles. I'm thinking of getting a Joe Battle Wagon.
