And yeah even ignoring GuP, Oarai is a really nice town. Just made even more fun to wander around if you do like GuP.
Have been there 3 times in my 2 japan trips. Once each trip for a weekend to relax and once during the Ankou festival (which was amazing fun). 100% recommend a visit if ever in japan.

This is like 7am in the morning, I had just been watching the sunrise at the same tori gate in OPs pic.
Thats the marine tower, which shows up in the anime a few times. It has a lookout on the top floor (60m up i think) that is only $2 to visit. and a cafe one level below with great views and is GuP themed, also reasonably priced and tasty food.
The people you can see in the right of the photo are just a few of the several hundred over there in a weekend market. Had some GuP stuff, some airsoft guns, and a whole lot of random shit as it was a trash and treasure type market (hoping thats not only an australian term and you know what i mean, might be a 'flea market' for americans i think?).
