As long as you have most of your shit together and can function like a normal human being people won't have a problem with it. Even if you're ugly, as long as you dress well (I don't mean expensive, just well fitting, modern clothes) and have a job/pay your bills most people will just see it as a hobby and not care. I'm sure the majority of /toy/ would shit on most sneaker collectors and call them idiots, but that doesn't stop them.
There's all kinds of collectors out there, someone on a podcast I was listening too said something that struck a chord with me, He said that although he collects stuff, he feels more like he's curating it for the time being, holding on to the stuff, making sure it's taken care of before it eventually passes on to the next person who appreciates it.
