Even when they did come back they looked completely different. As a kid I didn't even understand when the Piraka to Mahri arcs took place. I must've missed a comic somewhere that explained we were back to the present time.
You can tell that Farshtley didn't like the Mata characters for some reason, maybe because the plot bad not achieved unnecessary complexity during their time. He seemed to dislike writing for any character who wasn't a Makuta or involved with the brotherhood.
