I don't have a lot of space at home for a large layout, and the largest I'm willing to go for something like this is variations on a cutup 4'x8' sheet of plywood like picrel, though ideally less than that if possible.
I want to minimize the overall size as much as possible by having very small radius curves and short spurs since with it being narrow gauge the prototypical operating speeds wouldn't be very high to begin with. Needless to say, I think there is a lot that can be done with very small areas if you are creative enough, arguably even possibly so with O scale provided you were doing narrow gauge.
