Homophobia really scared a lot of straight men away from interesting clothing choices in the early 2000s and on. It's still happening really, walk into any clothing store and you'll see 5 dozen different types of tops for women in every possible color, and for men there are like two choices of the same shirt, one in grey and one in black. It's so dull. I suspect the reason why so many straight men dress so shittily is because they programmed themselves into being afraid to try anything even slightly daring fashion-wise.
