I have a large collection I started during college, and while I've occasionally gotten some gentle ribbing from a friend here and there, I'm married now and my wife is totally cool with it and began collecting toys after seeing how fun it was (I collect action figures and do customs, she likes stuff leaning towards dolls, with some action figures from stuff she likes). My family used to be a little mocking from time to time, but they know I'm paid well and I pretty much just explained "I like how they look and I like posing them, it's fun', and they don't really bring it up any more.
I think what's most important is not spending more than you can afford and ignoring criticism from stupid people. I didn't start til I lived on my own, and I didn't go crazy til I had a well-paying job
