Kids stop playing with toys so much because society stops having money and relaxed labor laws means they work at age 10 again, since there is no point in taking on fuckloads of student debt to finish (privatized) highschool or college. Toys either become /tg/-focused DIY models or simplier toys (eg wooden block cars) for small children who can't easily destroy them. I'm ok with both.
Case study: model trains. The middle market that used to be occupied by the metal Tomy trains and the blue track ones is largely gone, it's either simple wooden trains (which are fine) or actual model trains for teens. See Marklin's lineup as an example, it's divided between their My World trains and their actual model trains. I as an adult unironically love the My World trainsets though because they're cheaper than full blown DCC modded model trains, and can do more complicated track designs due to the on-board battery power.
disclaimer: I live in an area without any toy stores beyond private dealers, most of whom also run bike shops
