It was a squad based FPS where you could choose from the different characters that all had their own skills and specialties. Motoko could stealth, Batou had a built in rocket launcher in his arm that could damage tanks/sentries, Saito could see through walls and mark enemies, etc. And if you leveled up the skill enough, you could link it with your squad mates so they got the benefits of the first level which was cool and made it necessary to stick close together at times. On top of all that, they had a lot of customization with the skills/your character as well as all of the weapons which was sick.
My favorite thing though was that no matter what, your team was always displayed as the Section 9 members to you and the enemy team was always displayed as terrorists that had equivalent silhouettes. I think that would be a cool feature in a Joe game where you could set your preference for your view so you would always be Cobra fighting Joes or vice versa and everyone got their own preference displayed. So if you were set as Joes and played as Snake Eyes, your equivalent model on the Cobra side would be Storm Shadow since the skills and play style would be similar. That way you never had to worry about getting stuck on a side that you don't care for or can switch whenever you feel like it without it actually effecting the team balancing.
