Conventional Lionel will need a traditional transformer, so if you pick ip an older Lionel loco, you'll need a standard AC transformer. The up side is, it'll give you more power and you can run your Lionchief by cranking the throttle to full and running with the remote as normal. Williams by Bachmann locos are entirely conventional. Rail King locos use a proprietary version of DCC called DCS, but will run in conventional mode on a layout powered by an AC transformer.
