>>7537009iIhave Mamod engines, right now, in terms of rail operated stuff. I have the old SL1 engines made by Mamod, now made by a company called MSS, and the Mamod Brunel - a verticle boilered engine. They're cheap engines, a new SL1 by MSS will set you back about £250, plus shipping to the US, I assume. I would advise against going this route. The SL1 is okay, but very crude. The MSS made ones also have major quality control issues, and run very fast. MSS have fucked up 3 parts, out of 3 parts ordered from them, by me. I ordered a set of O gauge wheels, and they didn't fit O gauge track, so that should give you some insight as to why I do not trust them. If you want an SL1, buy an old one.
The Brunel is good, but only after a lot of remedial work, as Mamod now also suffer with Q.C issues, too. Things like blocked pipes for the pressure gauge, and a leaking gas burner.
I would advise you save about £650 and buy a locomotive from the Roundhouse Engineering company, here in the U.K. They make a very nice American style saddle tank switcher, in their basic series. Their other engines are a lot more expensive, but the American loco in their basic series is the best of the bunch.
