I usually just cut the edges first, using small, regular shapes which fit the corners of the piece, then use liquid mask to mask out the bulk of the canopy. No waste, no fuss.
Really old example of mine where I did the literal opposite (liquid edge, tape middle) but you get the gist. I havent really been building planes in the past 2 years.
