>>5995161I use marker on the base to indicate rank with bars, chevrons or stars. In some battles I did have it where soldiers that fought with particular distinction would earn a special chevron, a system I've carried over to my Star Wars Starship Battles Miniatures, in that latter game I will give names to all the capital ships and if they fought well enough it will be written on the base.
Pic related shows some of the ranked troops among their units, I wonder sometimes if the people I sold them to ever figured out my system, if they made their own around it.
