The dragon head has to rotate around, the horns flip down to cover the eyes, and the entire thing folds back into the neck hollow while the ankle flips up into the spot the head previously occupied; the tail tip is more straightforward, since there's no rotating involved. So yeah, if you were going with the whole 'partsform the feet into the holes to hide them' route, they'd have to be detached for the transformation to work. But considering Crimsonflame's entire back is made up of a partsforming shield that needs to be removed for the transformation (and it is a welcome addition, given how awkward Steelbane's and Skullitron's beast mode backs look), I don't think that would be too much of an issue.
