I think more front-heavy darts usually have better range.
That little hole on the tip of the Elite dart really fucks with its accuracy... I think. I don't think old streamlines and whistlers had this problem as much.
As for why whistlers aren't used: more difficult feeds for mag-fed blasters. Blasters that used whistlers and old suckers always had the tip poke out of the front of the barrel or at least never had the whole dart inside the actual barrel itself.
You can see something similar to this with the 1/2" pvc blowguns people used for whistlers. It would grip the tip instead of the dart itself and not seal super great. They were scary, don't get me wrong, but you couldn't make a spring-powered blaster out of that kind of barrel or slap a magazine onto it and load it correct every time because the tip would grip in just the wrong way or if you had a breach it could possibly snap the dart after it closed.
