I've got a dozen briefcases and some of them are decades old and still work fine. Looking back on it, the objectively better decision would have been to ask for the free CMF bag, but I was just shocked and pissed that the material was so shoddy that it broke right away, and I wanted Lego to pay for the replacement instead of getting one for 20 cents on cracklink because I couldn't believe the quality had gone downhill so far.
The new one seems to be fine so maybe it really was just a fluke.
