The BJD hobby seems pretty tame too if I just work quietly at my desk and not meet other people.
How "totally not crazy" your experience with a hobby is highly depends on yourself.
Can't count how often I thought "oh, this seems nice, very normal, no drama" when entering a new hobby/only lurking a hobby, just because I didn't bother to dig deeper.
As soon as you do that you always find your crazies, hidden drama, people bitching over nothing and backstabbing.
Fuck, I still remember when I looked into the 501 (the Star Wars guys), if you think BJDs are bad look how some grown up men bitch at each other about who spent the most money on plastic armor.
