Personally it doesn't appeal to me. I gave it up playing pokemon early with specific characters after realizing I was buying duds for the sake of completion. Fuck that. Now I just buy what I like. Since I don't have a shelf-ster-fuck it doesn't matter if anything goes together since I rotate things out on my limited desk space. At most I buy different versions of the same character because they are vastly different from one another. For example I picked up RID2015 Quillfire because he's a cool bastard even he doesn't go with anything else I have. I also bought 3 different 3p versions of Sludge without their other dinonot members because they all ticked my boxes.
