Lando was the first non-yellow figure but racially different minifigures really came to be with the NBA line. Lego had to make the figures recognizable as the players. While they do have different faces, it would be difficult to differentiate players had they all been yellow. It makes sense for these figures to have different skin tones, they have to portray their characters often played by real people.
Lego has vastly improved their figures since the time of early 2000s Harry Potter. We're seeing huge availability, variety, better printing and more accurate representations while still not being overly specialized with the new sets. As well as better set builds and a larger amount of elements to build with. Though I do agree that vintage Lego has a certain charm.
