If you sand up through the grits, it will eventually smooth back out and regain its color. That's a lot of work though. What a lot of people do is just do a rough sanding job, then spray the piece with matte topcoat, which helps hide the sanded spots (as well as giving it a beautifully smooth velvety look).

It's...it's a topcoat, all right. That's as much as I'll give it. I personally think Krylon is ugly as shit, Testors is just barely acceptable, and after that it becomes a gradient of varying qualities until you reach the pinnacle of Tamiya TS-80/Mr. Super Clear Flat. If you're too much of a cheapskate to buy Japanese topcoat, I advise you never try it even once, cause once you see and feel that velvety-smooth finish, reflecting little to no light, there's no going back. All other topcoats will be ruined for you.

And yes, I know this guy did a shit-ass spray job on this Gouf. It just happens to be the only well-lit topcoat comparison shot I have on hand.

Different anon here, absolute best matte topcoats are Tamiya TS-18 and Mr. Super Clear Flat. These both give a beautiful velvety matte with very minimal reflectivity (cast light distributes itself smoothly across the surface rather than forming distinct visible shapes like on bare plastic). I can practically guarantee that one of those two products was used to topcoat this Gouf. Note how the light forms harsh and visible shapes on the bare plastic, and how much it smooths out on the topcoated one.

Testors is cheaper and easier to find, but it's not worth it IMO. It won't give you nearly as smooth and nice of a surface (examined closely you will see visible grit), and it's not as matte, so you will still see vague pinpoints of reflected light in it. Don't waste your money, just spend a few bucks more and get an actually nice topcoat.

I'm a strictly Mr. Hobby/Tamiya guy now. Those two always give incredibly smooth and very flat results with very minimal reflectivity. I think the difference is quite apparent side by side. I would take a comparison photo for you to show you, but my Testors coated kits are in storage literally thousands of miles away.

See the velvety-smooth coat on this Gouf? You will never get that with Testors. Testors is def cheaper and easier to source in the US, but well, you get what you pay for.

Top coat cans are a way of making your models look good through matte.
You can however also choose to give them a glossy finish as well.

You said you don't like painting but what about small details on models that can't provide all the colours? Do you still use a paintbrush or gundam marker to fill in those details to make it show-accurate? It is really easy to paint small details, you can just use the markers themselves as well, however you may get more neat and precise paint with a small brush.
