I'd love to see a breakdown of how much Mattel makes from dollar mainlines vs, the premium stuff. Based on how much store shelf space is used for each I'd guess the premiums make up at least 50% of their profits.
There are already loads of other (better) builders making high-end models of aircraft. If a guy like me wanted a nice shelf replica of the fighter I worked on in the AF, or an airline pilot wanted a model of the Boeing 757 he flies we both have tons of good options...and they won't have a silly 'Hot Wheels" tampo on them.
If Mattel ever wanted to break into this market I think they'd hide their identity by operating with a different brand name or buying out an existing maker. But maybe it's just not worth it to them.
