If it's one (major) mistake I've done as somebody who has been collecting since 2009, it's not focusing on the kind of collection I want, and just buying whatever tickles my fancy a bit. Try to keep an overall theme with your collection, as it helps with impulse control, keeps your collection/display nicer and overall unified, and can save you money as you're limiting yourself to what you collect. Just because you like a series and the figures are fine doesn't necessarily mean you should start a collection--make sure to do some research and see what kind of figures you're really into.
There's a lot of people here who buy a shit ton of things (esp. flavour of the month), and then end up selling a lot of it on the BST. Don't be one of them.
Also, don't buy a figure just because it's on sale or whatever (unless it's a really fuckin' good sale). Save your money on something you actually want; just because it's a good figure doesn't necessarily mean you'll enjoy it.
>I've got an ongoing list of about 20-30 figures I'm currently interested in grabbing once I start getting paid
Mind posting that list? Maybe some people can offer better alternatives or whatever.
Also, lrn2havefun. Don't be one of those jackasses who get elitist over fucking playing things, or how much they've spent on pre-orders this month.
