IMO the fact that Pokemon kept Ash, DBZ kept Goku, but YuGiOh did NOT keep Yugi might be why YuGiOh ended up dying a slow death.
Even from a story standpoint, what the FUCK were Yugi, Kaiba, and all the other badasses from the original series doing when all these retared supervillains were trying to destroy the world in GX? At least hint that they were doing something super duper important instead of "well I guess Yugi and Kaiba are retards who wont duel whoever is trying to destroy the world"
