Where GoBots was basically a straight up carbon copy, Transformers, as a concept, reimagined the toyline into something much better.
Transformers was already being developed by Marvel in 1983 before Matchbox started creating promo work in 1984. Hence both TF and GoBots cartoons coming out the same year.
So no matter what, it's a straight up battlestar galactica
