So this box art actually has an illustration of the "pink berries and translucent pink leaves" plant, which apparently has the berries glowing. This lends itself to my theory that they absorb and transform crystal energy.
The science lab is built around a natural rock pillar bristling with other plant life, which includes a more mature version of the "black tentacle/blue flower" plant seen in the earlier command rover set. You can still see the blue flower in the middle of the bloom which has now grown purple leaves and petals around it, and the blue is leaking some kind of nectar (pink frog, but all of them angled so as to suggest a dripping liquid). On the rock pillar are the trans-pink pyramid pieces from the secret unique crystal behind the rock in the command rover set. This pink pyramid crystal is now firmly established to have some kind of relationship with the black tentacle plant, but the nature of that relationship is a mystery.
I think the pink carrot and purple spiny thing from the command rover is a third distinct plant species, merely background flavor for now.
