Doesn't take a leap in logic to assume he learned more than what was shown on screen, just like how he was able to ride around on a ice kangeroo, pilot a snow speeder, and use a lightsaber. He joined the rebellion and was taught somethings by a master jedi, and he had time to practice shit like any passionate human would.
Not everyone is a fatguy arguing about stupid shit on the internet feeling smug and superior to the next fatguy arguing about stupid shit on the internet, while not actually doing anything with their life.
People like this are passionate about what they're doing, learning new shit, and trying to better their lives and others lives in a holy war, just like the dirty Force believing rebels in Star Wars who killed millions of innocent civilians in one single cowardly attack.
